Kim Clijsters Shows the Malaise That Has Struck Women’s Tennis

And deservedly so, out of everyone who is playing, she is the best, and the only player capable of matching her, Serena Williams, has been on a very long injury sabbatical.
While I am not her biggest fan, I respect what she has done during her comeback. She has won three majors and lifted herself out of the semi-mocked group of one-slam wonders. She has brought credibility back into the world No. 1 position after a long period of what seemed to be young seat-warmers only filling in for Serena Williams.
In this regard, she’s tennis' new Golden Girl.
After the complete embarrassment that Serena Williams was in the US Open 2009, she has provided a more clean and wholesome view of tennis.
And the women need that right now.
Fortunately, she came just in time.
The woman who had for so long propped up women’s tennis since 2007, Serena Williams, can’t even make it to her beloved majors. Her inconsistency, streaky play and multiple injuries have banished her from the game for what looks like eight to 10 months. Despite this, she can still just come into a major, unfit, no match practice and lacking in virtually everything that the other girls need to win a major and still huff and puff her way to a major title.
What Kim has done is restore a great in the women’s game. Serena was like this in 2009, before the US Open incident. She was playing a decent amount of tourneys, she was winning and going deep, in a lot of them, and even at No. 2, she seemed a world away from the rest of the field.
That’s how Clijsters is now.
She’s better than she was pre-retirement, but her ascension to the top is not her raising her game to completely new levels compared to the field. It’s about the field’s level regressing, and the lack of star quality in the women’s game.
