Roger Federer: Loss to Andy Murray Is Sign of Things to Come

Roger Federer was eliminated from the Australian Open after a semifinal loss to Andy Murray. There's no doubt that Federer must be disappointed, but that's a feeling the four-time Australian Open champion better get used to.

Federer has had his time at the top of the tennis world. He's won almost 80 singles matches, 17 Grand Slam titles and six year-end titles. It's no secret that Federer was an amazing player—emphasis on was. 

The Swiss superstar is still one of the best tennis players in the world, but he's on his way out. The 31-year-old is still better than most, but he's nothing compared to what he used to be. From 2004 to 2007, he made 10 consecutive Slam finals. His ridiculous run has slowed down in the last few years. 

Since his 16th career Grand Slam in 2010, he's won just one major tournament in his last 12 attempts. Fed is currently rated as the No. 2 player in the world, but after his loss to No. 3 Murray, that may change. 

Federer, at 31, has moved into the dangerous territory of being a player who has been in the game for upward of a decade. As the younger players move in, he'll continue having issues keeping up. 



Against Murray it was pretty apparent that Fed-Ex's tank has started to shrink. He looked out of gas at times during the long match, and that will be a huge issue if Federer continues meeting such talented players throughout tournaments. 

Federer is one of the game's best, and he will most likely pick up a few big wins this year. However, the years of winning two or three majors are behind him. Federer has had an amazing career, but it will be very hard for him to keep up with talented young players like Djokovic, Murray and other youngsters who are on top of the world of tennis.
