Roger Federer: The Chance to Make History Down Under…Again

With the Australian Open less than a few days away, Roger Federer will arrive under the large shadow being cast by his younger rival Rafael Nadal.
Nadal currently holds the past three Grand Slams in his pocket and is looking to be the first men’s player to hold all four Slams simultaneously since Rod Laver.
It is widely assumed that Nadal enters this month’s Australian Open as the slight favorite to take his second title down under. However, with all the pressure on Nadal, Federer seems to be playing the best tennis he has produced since last January, when he won this same tournament.
With Federer’s results since Wimbledon, it is hard to find someone on the ATP Tour playing better tennis heading into the year’s first Slam.
It is funny to think that the defending champion at Melbourne Park is nearly written off, relatively speaking, thanks to Nadal’s pursuit of the “Rafa Slam.” Federer is still the defending champion of the Australian Open and looking to win his fifth title down under. If he can accomplish that feat, he will have done it at three of the four Grand Slams, as well as at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
So let us not write off Roger, for he has the chance to make history on his own...again, and again.
