Men's
Men's No. 1 Novak Djokovic overcame an early bobble to defeat Ernests Gulbis in three sets (5-7, 7-6, 6-1) on Friday night to move on to the semifinals.
Djokovic had to save two Gulbis match points in the second set and managed to come back in tie-breaking fashion. Gulbis was playing some of the best tennis he has ever played, leaving Djokovic flabbergasted at times, as Tennis TV shows:
The win ensures that Djokovic remains undefeated at Masters events this year, according to the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg.
Rafa Nadal came into Friday's quarterfinal as the underdog and had his hands full with Kei Nishikori, as Tennis TV takes a look at just one of the favorite's winners during his fast start:
No. 4 Nishikori handled No. 7 Nadal easily, winning in straight-sets 6-2, 6-4. Though the hard court was never his forte, it seems like a preview of what's to come as they continue their respective careers.
Women's
Serena Williams, the tournament's top seed, is through to the semifinals after a quick two-set victory over Italy's Roberta Vinci. The WTA shows Williams' match-winner:
This is Williams' 18th win in her last 19 matches, with her lone blemish coming in the second round of the Swedish Open.
The other high seeds that were in action on Friday also managed to make their way through, as No. 2 Simona Halep beat sixth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 15 Sara Errani moved past Lesia Tsurenko.
