Serena Williams marched into the second round of the 2014 Australian Open with a 6-2, 6-1 straight-sets win over Ashleigh Barty.



Williams, who will be hoping to secure her sixth Australian Open singles title during this year's championship, was typically powerful from the back of the court and eased into the next round with 31 winners and six aces, per the tournament's official website.

Despite the dominant result, Barty should be applauded for her effort. The 17-year-old competed admirably against one of the game's most illustrious players, but Williams' win ultimately extends an impressive run of victories, as noted by ESPN:



The Australian Open's official Twitter account provided a statement from Williams discussing Barty at the post-match press conference:



Barty, born in Ipswich, Australia, showed a real lack of fear in front of her local support and took the opening game with an ace. Williams quickly levelled with a forehand volley winner before a trio of unforced errors saw Barty give up the lead.

The youngster failed to significantly challenge the world No. 1's lead throughout the rest of the encounter and saw her home Grand Slam appearance conclude after 57 minutes in the limelight.



She hit five winners, the solitary ace that captured her opening-game win, but also conceded 18 unforced errors.

Barty was unable to halt Williams' relentless power—much like most opponents put in front of the 32-year-old legend—and was battered into submission during a professional display from her vastly more experienced opponent.

Barty shouldn't be downhearted about the heavy defeat, and indeed she did herself proud in front of the vocal Australian support.
