In the end, it is as it should be. No. 1 Novak Djokovic will face No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the finals of the 2013 U.S. Open.
Nadal and Djokovic have had a seesaw battle over the years, but Rafa holds a 21-15 edge in the all-time series.
The tennis world will be treated to another battle on Monday. Here's how you can see their next chapter and the crowning of this year's champ in New York.
Djokovic had to rally from behind during his match with No. 9 Wawrinka, but ultimately he outlasted the 28-year-old from Switzerland. Wawrinka took the first set 6-2, and Djokovic trailed in the second set before pulling it out 7-6 (7-4).
Wawrinka rebounded and took the third set 6-3, but when it counted most, Djokovic was money. He took the third and fourth sets to complete another marathon Grand Slam match with Wawrinka. The final tally was 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The two men had battled in a five-set masterpiece at the Australian Open earlier in the year. This one was at least on par with that epic match. Though Wawrinka has given Djokovic tough matches, Djokovic owns a 15-2 edge over him in their career series.
Nadal didn't have nearly as tough of a time with the No. 8 seed, Richard Gasquet. After dropping the first set, the 27-year-old Frenchman pushed Nadal to a tiebreaker in the second set, but the Spaniard quickly seized momentum and romped to a straight-sets win, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
Nadal moved to 11-0 against Gasquet in his career.
Aside from Djokovic's close call in the semifinals, he hasn't had much trouble in the tournament. He dropped one other set before his battle with Wawrinka. Likewise, Nadal has dropped only one set en route to his berth in the finals.
