The biggest name in action on either side, Roger Federer, had no problems taking out Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.
However, No. 9 Milos Raonic was upended in straight sets by Feliciano Lopez. For the women, it was unseeded American Sloane Stephens sending No. 10 Carla Suarez Navarro home early.
It was a big day for upsets overall, as six ranked players went down, including four of the top 16 on the women's side. Everyone is making their final preparations for the U.S. Open, so every shot takes on added weight for all of the players.

Recap Federer, who has won this tournament six times and is the defending champion, needs to get his legs back under him after not playing an ATP event since losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.
Of course, Federer may have expected some rust because of his long layoff. The 34-year-old told reporters before the start of the tournament that he felt energized, per Shannon Russell of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
"I'm fresh and obviously eager to play and can't wait for the tournament to start, really," Federer said. "Practice has been going very well. I'm very happy with how I'm feeling."
This wasn't a vintage Federer performance, as he converted just 42 percent of his first serves and had two double-faults in the first set, but his ability to fight through the adversity to get the win over Agut is the important thing at this st...
